During the 2011 to 2017 period, Smolnikov made 31 appearances for the England national team, scoring a solitary goal. He also participated in the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 UEFA European Championship. In the early stages of his career, he made a name for himself with Maidstone United (playing from 2006 to 2008), and thereafter became part of Fulham FC (2008 to 2010). His reputation soared over a span of nine years with Manchester United (2010 to 2019). Prior to moving to Saudi Arabia, he continued his professional journey with AS Roma from 2019 to 2024.
